Mixtape Review: TrapStar "In Tune With My Star Player"

Greenville, South Carolina native TrapStar is making waves with his current project, “In Tune With My Star Player”, hosted by fellow SC natives, DJ Dyce and DJ Cannon Banyon. After listening to this tape, I can honestly understand why Trap is co-signed by Charlamagne the God – this dude is a problem.

First impressions will make or break you, and the first track on an album serves as that. TrapStar delivered a strong introduction with the title track “In Tune With My Star Player” and set the tone for what was to come. The production was hard-hitting, and further complimented by Trap’s distinct style and lyrics. TrapStar showcased his diversity well. “SC to TX” featuring Paul Wall was a great display of two southern representers coming together to make good Chevy music. One thing I want to point out is even though he had a major artist featured on this track, Trap still stood out. Often time’s unsigned artists get outshined by major artists on their own shit – not this time, I salute him twice for that. I also enjoyed “Glass of Milk (Body Feel Good)”, a track catering to the ladies and furthering proving that he’s capable of making more than just trap music. Charlamagne the God made an appearance on the mixtape, blessing us with his classic shit talking. Other honorable mentions: “Mama Told Me”, “Phone Off the Hook”, and “Rocky Road”. TrapStar did well with choosing production throughout the mixtape, as each track complimented his sound and delivery – a mix of original and industry beats.

It’s safe to say that we will be seeing much more of TrapStar. There’s no way that this type of talent will go unnoticed. Unlike most other upcoming artists, Trap knows how to distinguish himself from the rest. He’s not trying to sound like someone else in order to grab your attention. He possesses originality, diversity, and a southern-style lyricism that will prevent him from getting lost in the shuffle. I definitely co-sign.
