Mixtape Review: Lil Brod "Key 2 Da City"

Lil Brod - KEY 2 DA CITY

Lil Brod is a rising young star out of Columbia, SC ready to take the hip-hop world by storm with his latest mixtape, “Key 2 Da City” hosted by fellow South Carolinian DJ B-Lord. With the help of his label, Head Hunter Records, Brod and B-Lord came together to produce a hood classic that the Carolinas can proudly say is a strong representation of their state and music.

Like I always say, the intro to an album or mixtape is like the first impression you’re leaving with your listeners. B-Lord delivers an excellent, and creative intro as usual. Following the intro was the mixtape title track, “Key 2 Da City” produced by power SC producer Ninemill, which displays Brod’s lyrical style and southern swag. Lil Brod then delivers a track called “I’m Wrong” where he addresses his conscience and the pressures to engage in things he shouldn’t in order to feed his family. Brod is another one of those few artists that knows how to create a variety of music catering to his different audiences. “Beast It Out”, “All I Know”, and “Activate” are hard-hitting tracks for the hood and the hustlers. Then he delivers deeper tracks like “Sometimes I”, and “Do What I Gotta Do” where he again discusses situations involving his family and struggles. But of course Brod didn’t forget about the ladies! “Say Yea” featuring fellow Columbia native Boss G, “Love About Me”, featuring Big Maine and Collard Green, and my personal favorite “Do U Mind” which is currently tearing up the radio stations, are a few that I know the ladies will enjoy and even the fellas can rock to.

Lil Brod definitely did his thing on this project. With production from Ninemill, and DJ B-Lord hosting, they complimented each other very well and definitely put on for South Carolina in a major way. Brod is, in my opinion, a well-oiled machine destined to become a positive asset to southern hip hop.
